By Harrison Berry November 10, 2018 Side gigs are the cars of the new millennium: Everybody seems to have one, and comedian Vicki Barbolak is no exception. She's a stellar comedian—she was a finalist in the last season of America's Got Talent—but she's also an ordained minister who officiates weddings, anniversaries and vow renewal ceremonies from her van, Wedding Chapel to Go. The service has received high marks for Barbolak's professionalism and (surprise) good humor, but the enterprise is tinged with a kind of irony, in that by her own estimation, she has burned through so many husbands she has a punch card at the local wedding cake bakery and enough monogrammed hand towels to spell out passive-aggressive messages to her current beau. Barbolak is the funniest mom in America, a devotee of the Southern California trailer park lifestyle, the mentee of The Comedy Store Founder Mitzi Shore and a member of Jay Leno's NBC Comedy Squad. On her Trailer Nasty tour, she'll cruise through Boise on Wednesday, Nov. 14, and stop at The Balcony Club. That's where she'll share the stage with comedian Matt Bragg and the host for the evening, none other than Boise Weekly advice columnist Minerva Jayne. The show starts at 8 p.m.,...

By Ken Harrison, Oct. 19, 2018 It’s been one month now since Oceanside comedian Vicki Barbolak appeared in the live final round of America’s Got Talent. Although she missed out on the one-million-dollar prize placing (she placed sixth out of the ten finalists), her life has changed dramatically. I caught up with her by phone on October 18, as she was driving up to L.A. for a meeting with producers about a possible sitcom. America’s Got Talent executive producer and judge, Simon Cowell, had mentioned on the air maybe wanting to work with Barbolak on a sitcom. “That hasn’t happened yet,” she said. For 20 years, Barbolak has been performing her Trailer Park Trophy Wife shtick in comedy clubs where she could get booked. She appeared as a regular at the La Jolla Comedy Store, where she met her husband of 13 years, Lou, the club’s piano player. What did she think about before her final TV performance at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater? “I didn’t sleep the night before because [during her act] I wanted to take off my dress and be wearing a bathing suit,” she said. Two minutes before going on stage, the producer said if she was going to do it, she needed...

Answer. Really, I liked them all. Simon gave me great advice, Heidi and Mel were very supportive and Howie helped me out when I was a bundle of nerves. The whole experience was life changing. Even Tyra was so sweet and helped me with my nerves....
